BOSTON — The industrial farmhouse trend, a style that combines modern features with rustic elements and industrial–inspired accents, is resonating among homeowners, according to a newly released report that tracks the popularity of products for kitchens, baths and other rooms.
The report, the first in a series released by the Boston-based online product resource Wayfair, explores how the industrial farmhouse trend is taking shape in terms of materials, finishes and products in kitchens and baths across North America. Findings were based on Wayfair search trends from Jan. 1-July 1, 2019, and supplemented with data from Pinterest where applicable, Wayfair officials said.
“While there are regional variations, it’s clear that industrial farmhouse is evolving in new ways across North America,” observed Margaret Lawrence, v.p. for Wayfair Professional, a leading e-commerce tool for professional remodelers, including kitchen and bath designers.
Wayfair’s renovation report highlighted 10 top design elements within the Industrial Farmhouse trend, including the following:
n Patterned Pieces: Marble mosaic tiles “are the bathroom flooring of choice,” said Wayfair, adding that consumers “can select either bold colors or neutral-toned geometric patterns and make a strong visual impact with this natural stone.”
n Sinks that Float: Vessel sinks are overflowing with style and popularity, as searches for this bathroom space-saver have jumped significantly, according to Wayfair. Traditionally used in guest bathrooms, the growing demand hints at expanded use, potentially in double vanities in master bathrooms, the company said.
n The Boldest Neutral: Matte black fixtures evoke rustic water pumps “and speak to industrial design elements, contrasting against the lighter greys and whites of showers, sinks and vanities,” according to Wayfair.
n Shape Up: Geometric pendant lights with open frames “add depth and dimension to any space,” said Wayfair, noting that consumer searches for this trend are on the rise, “with consumers seeking a fresh update to a more traditional pendant lighting.”
n Elevate Everything: Open shelving is replacing cabinet uppers across kitchens, freeing up wall space for a lighter, more minimal look, according to the Wayfair report. “Industrial or rustic shelves add character while showing off serving ware, plates, glasses and more,” the company said.
